What percentage of homes are with bed bugs?

There was a time when bed bugs where not as common as they are today. Over the past ten years they have made a serious come back.

Studies show that nearly 40% of homes have had bed bugs. The increase of these blood suckers is primarily due to the increase in people traveling.

If you have read my story about getting bed bugs you know they can easily hitch a ride in your suitcase, backpacks, and of course your mattress and cause a serious problem once they get into your home.

How long does it take to get a bedbug infestation?

It’s generally 7 weeks for bed bugs to grow from egg to adult.

So it you are experiencing an infestation you know that it’s likely been at least this time frame that you have had bed bugs in your home.

Fortunately bed bugs are slow to reproduce and each adult female only produces one-two eggs per day.

Then each egg takes 10 days to hatch. After that up to seven weeks to be an adult.

How Quickly Do Bed Bugs Spread?

Depending on how many bed bugs have entered your home lets say it’s just one that recently mated it could produce up to 50 nymphs in a single month.

Now by month two you will have up to 10 breeding adults that can produce hundreds of developing bed bugs in various stages and more eggs.

Once it gets to the third month you are in real trouble because now there will be a colony of bed bugs that will have grown to at least 100 breeding adults.

They can survive 6 to 12 months without a meal. If left untreated that one bed bug will have populated over 8,000 breading adults and 100,000s of nymphs.

There will also be up to 60,000 eggs waiting to hatch by this time. This is why prevention and early detection is so important.
