#2. When Traveling Use Hard-Sided Luggage –
I wish I would have known this sooner because this is exactly how I got bed bugs. They hitched a ride to my home in my luggage.
Hard-sided luggage with over-lapping zippers makes it more difficult for bedbugs to enter your home by hitching a ride in your suitcase.
#3. Inspect Your Hotel Room Before Unpacking Your Luggage –
This is another piece of advice I wish I would have known earlier.
It’s always a good idea to give your hotel room an inspection of sorts.
Here are the places your should look at carefully:
- Mattress seams
- Dresser Drawers
- Under Sofa Cushions
- Inside Pillow Cases
- Check for rust colored spotting or black spots
If you notice any spots that is a good indication that there are bed bugs either there now or in the past.
I’d advise asking for another room in that hotel or if possible going to another hotel that doesn’t have any of these signs after inspection.
#4. Diatomaceous Earth To The Rescue –
You can purchase diatomaceous earth online or at most health stores.
By sprinkling it around areas that have bedbugs you can kill them.

Using steam is an effective way to coaxing bedbugs out of hiding spots.
This will let you know where to treat your home too.
Also, if the temperature reaches 113 degrees Fahrenheit to 118F you can also kill bedbugs in all their stages.
#6. Throughly Clean All Of Your Clothes After Vacations –

A vacuum-sealed storage bag works best!

I didn’t even know these existed until it was too late for me, but for a small cost, you can get a bedbug detector.
These kits will alert you when bedbugs are lurking in your home. This can save you from having a full-blown infestation. Well worth it in my opinion.
#9. Silica Gel Works Wonders –
Not sure what this is? If you ever wondered what those packs are when you get new shoes or sometimes find these tiny packs in your food.

This won’t entirely get rid of bedbugs, but it will reduce the bedbugs number of bedbugs that could be breeding in your home.
Vacuum your entire home and when you are finished place vacuum bags in the trash immediately.
Make sure to seal the bags tight and place them in the outside trash.
If you have a bagless vacuum just empty the remains into the trash outdoors.
Then thoroughly clean the inside of the bagless vacuum. It’s best to do this outside too.
#11. That Hair Dryer Is A Bedbugs Worst Nightmare –
That’s right you can use your hairdryer on a low setting to coax out any hiding bedbugs…
…just like you did when you used steam.
To make this work effectively air towards the baseboards.
If you suspect bedbugs hiding in other areas of your home you can use your hairdryer to lure them out there too.
#12. Inspect Laundry Machines –
This is especially important if you use a laundromat. Before placing your clothes into the washer or dryer do an inspection and check for bedbugs.
That previous user might have left bedbugs behind for you to take home with you.
Use a flashlight or your phone to look around first before placing your clothes inside the machines.
#13. Seal Out Bedbugs –
Bedbugs are extremely tiny insects measuring only 0.18 to 4.5 mm as an adult…
for reference that makes them about the size of an apple seed.
Look for gaps in your baseboards, windows, even outlets. If you find any cracks seal them with silicone caulk.
This will greatly improve your defense against bedbugs by eliminating more places they can hide.
#14. Check Your Doors –
Another place these bad guys can enter is your doors. Make sure your doors are properly sealed.
This is even more important if you live in an apartment.
Get some plastic adhesive-backed draft stoppers for the bottom of your doors can help eliminate one point of entry.
This can help eliminate bedbugs in another way that might have been overlooked previously.
